Once you know there is ‘a model’, you begin to see it imitated – and find the origin of a pattern that seems to proliferate itself. In this case we see ‘Wanderer above the Sea of Fog’ by Casper David Friedrich as a model for movie posters.
The originator being long lost in the past, with no credit, no ‘tip of the hat’, and no financial reimbursement.
Intellectual heritage, it would seem, is written down as ‘inspiration’.
But as Thomas Edison eluded inspiration is worth 1%.*
*this is a flip on his famous quote that “Genius is one percent inspiration and ninety-nine percent perspiration”…
Artificial intelligence will be able to track back to source all ‘intellectual patterns’, finding the origin. The question will be whether a new approach to attribution will emerge.
